Russian and European massage are close relatives rather than rivals. Both grew out of the same classical, oil-based tradition, so the difference is one of emphasis: Russian technique tends to work deeper and more therapeutically into the muscle, while the wider European style leans toward flowing, relaxation-first strokes. If you want the tension worked out, ask for a Russian or deep-tissue approach. If you want to switch off and drift, a European or Swedish style is the gentler choice.
Where the two traditions come from
Classical European massage is the family that includes Swedish massage, the most widely practised style in the world. It is built on long gliding strokes, kneading and light-to-medium pressure, designed to calm the nervous system and improve circulation.
Russian massage developed from the same foundations but was shaped in a more clinical, rehabilitation-focused setting. Therapists trained in this tradition are known for reading the body carefully and adjusting pressure to release stubborn knots, which is why it feels more targeted and, at times, firmer.
At Aurrum Spa our therapists are trained across both European and Russian traditions, so a single session can move fluidly between relaxing and therapeutic work depending on what your body needs that day.
How they feel on the table
The clearest difference is in pressure and intent:
- European / Swedish style works at light to medium pressure with a steady, unhurried rhythm. The goal is calm. This is the treatment most people picture when they imagine a spa massage. Our Swedish relax massage is the classic example.
- Russian / therapeutic style works deeper into specific muscle groups to unwind chronic tightness in the back, neck and shoulders. If you sit at a desk all week, this is usually the more satisfying option, and our deep tissue massage sits squarely in this camp.
Neither should ever be painful. Good pressure feels like a firm, welcome release, not a fight. Your therapist checks in throughout and adjusts on request.
Which one should you book?
Use this quick guide:
- You want to relax and de-stress: choose a European or Swedish treatment, or an aromatherapy massage with calming essential oils.
- You carry tension or train hard: choose a Russian or deep-tissue treatment that targets the tight areas.
- You are not sure: book either and tell your therapist your priority at the start. Because our team blends both traditions, they will tailor the pressure to you.
